My son is has trouble in nearly all areas, but does not have a delay. Writing, running, jumping, throwing and catching a ball, riding a bike. He loves to play at recess, but has no confidence in gym class and will not join a team. Can you address this?

Hi Janice,
If you have specific goals and your pediatrician is in agreement that OT would help, we can certainly work with you and your son on those areas. Summer is an excellent time to address these areas to "brush up" for the next school year. Sometimes gaining just enough skill and confidence to participate with peers or to be chosen to be on a team is all it takes.

My child had a difficult school year, especially with attending in class. His teacher pointed out that he attends to everything in the room, except his work. My son describes small things, such as someone moving in their chair, any noise in the hallway, or even the sound of a pencil on paper during writing, as being very distracting to him. It has been suggested by the school psychologist that occupational therapy could help. What do you think?

Hi Diana,
Occupational therapy certainly can help your child. Sometimes children have oversensitivity to certain sensory stimuli such as to auditory or visual stimuli causing the child to have no choice but to attend to the stimuli. This can cause the child to be nearly unable to attend to anything else, especially for lectures or classroom assignments. Programs such as Therapeutic Listening can have a positive effect on one's ability to accommodate to a variety of sounds allowing them to filter out what is and what is not important. This situation should certainly be closely followed by your pediatrician to assure that there are not other issues which could be the cause of or contributing to your son's difficulties. Please continue with this forum or contact me directly if you would like to discuss more.
Sincerely,
Tim Conly

Hi,
Can you tell me if you work specifically on handwriting?

Hi Carol,
We certainly work on handwriting. One of the components of our Finger Gym program is handwriting and we can also work individually with children on handwriting skills. Please give me a call if you are interested in either of these services.

Sincerely,

Hi Tim,
Can you tell me if you are able to perform an evaluation for CPSE? My son has been referred for an evaluation and I'm not sure if I want the school to perform them.

Hi Shana,
Yes, we are able to complete evaluations that you can use to pursue services through CPSE and CSE. It would be a good idea to check with your school district first to see if they will accept an outside evaluation first. It is possible that a district may utilize an outside evaluation, and on occasion may reimburse you for the out of pocket fee. It most cases, however, school districts have a policy of performing their own evaluations. If you are trying to justify the need for services, an outside evaluation is very helpful as well as to seek an advocate and possibly legal assistance.

I hope this was helpful. We would be very interested in assisting you with your evaluation needs.

Sincerely
Tim Conly
